"Mission exists because worship doesn't"-John Piper
Mission is the task of helping people to come to know and worship God through Jesus. Cross-Cultural mission is doing this overseas, or with people of a different culture to yourself. Our desire to serve in cross-cultural mission stems from this Biblical conviction that God wants all nations and all people groups to know, to love and to worship Him.
From start to finish, the Bible is about God's plan to reconcile people from all nations to Himself through Jesus. Like lost sheep, people have wandered away from God, turned their backs on Him, run their own lives without Him, and not giving Him the thanks and glory that He deserves. The Bible calls this "Sin". Because of this, people miss out on living the life that God made them to live... a life of worship of the one true God! They ultimately face God's judgement - death, and an eternity without Him. However, the Good News is that through Jesus, people can come back into that right relationship with God and truly worship Him, not on our own terms but on His terms!
This Good News isn't just for Australians! It's for ALL nations, and ALL people from different ethnic groups! The Bible tells us that Jesus purchased people for God "from every tribe and language and people and nation" (Rev 5:9) and saved them by His death on the cross in order that they may come to know and worship the true and living God (Rev 7:9; Is 66:8).
The task of missions is by no means complete. Consider the following facts*:
- An estimated 1.5 Billion people have never had the opportunity to hear the gospel
- More than a quarter of the world's ethnolinguistic people groups have no viable church that can evangelise their own people
- In 29 countries, less than 1% of the population are Christians
As Christians, we are 'Christ' ambassadors' to the world. An ambassador is someone who represents his/her king/country in diplomatic affairs. As His ambassadors, Christ has sent us out on His behalf to make His appeal to the nations to be reconciled to God (2 Cor 5:20); to declare His glory and marvellous deeds among the nations (Ps 96:3); and to help gather all nations and tongues to worship Him by the sharing of the Good News about Jesus!
We do this with Christ's authority (not our own) to make disciples of all nations - teaching people how to follow Jesus - and trusting in His power and promise to be with us every step of the way (Matt 28:18-20).
And so our desire is to partner with God in His great cosmic renewal project of transforming the nations and the whole of creation to enjoy worshipping Him!
Declare His glory among the nations,
His marvellous deeds among all people.
Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you!
Let the nations be glad and sing for joy!"
